What to Expect from Veterinary Surgery

Our team will always keep you completely informed about the reasons why we are recommending surgery for your pet as well as on any post-operative care your cat or dog will require at home. At our clinic, we practice stringent surgical protocols.

Surgical Procedures

At Laguna Hills Animal Hospital, we conduct medical and emergency surgeries in order to help treat diseases and conditions in cats and dogs or to repair injuries that occurred through trauma.

Our Laguna Woods vets regularly perform these elective and non-elective surgeries:

• Soft Tissue Surgery

  We offer soft tissue surgical procedures for pets that are suffering from ear, nose, and throat disorders.

  Our vets may also conduct these procedures for hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders. 

• Spaying & Neutering

  When we spay or neuter a cat or dog, we surgically sterilize them in order to prevent disease and give them an extended life expectancy. 

• C-Sections

  Cesarean sections are conducted in order to surgically remove puppies or kittens from their mother's uterus.

  We generally perform C-sections when the mother can't give birth naturally. 

• Ocular

  If your cat or dog is suffering from eye pain, redness, or other symptoms in or around their eyes, they might require ocular surgery.

  Common ocular procedures for pets include eyelid tumor removal, cataract surgery, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, exenteration of the orbit and cherry eye surgery.

  If your cat or dog requires a veterinary surgical specialist to perform the surgery, our veterinarians will refer you a surgeon or specialist and work with them closely to make sure your pet receives the best possible care. 

• Orthopedic Surgery

  Orthopedic surgeries correct injuries and diseases in a pet's joints, ligaments, bones, tendons, and other skeletal structures. If your animal companion is suffering from a condition or injury that requires advanced specialized care your vet will refer to an orthopedic specialist to help your dog or cat. 

• Dental Surgery

  Our veterinarians offer dental surgeries for both cats and dogs. These surgeries could include tooth extractions, gum disease treatment, and jaw fracture repairs.

Veterinary Surgery Process

We realize that the thought of having to take your pet in for surgery can be frightening. We want to assure you that we only recommend surgery only when it is in your cat or dog's best interests. 

We'll make sure that you fully understand the reasons why we are recommending surgery, and that you are comfortable with your decision to move ahead with the procedure.

If your cat or dog requires advanced care, our vets will refer you to a veterinary surgeon near Laguna Woods, and work closely with them closely to make sure that your cat or dog gets the best care possible.

Surgical protocols at our clinic include:

Pre-surgical assessments. We will confirm the specifics of the procedure, conduct a physical examination of your pet, and ensure that the blood tests have been completed and reviewed by your vet in order to determine if your companion faces any risk of anesthesia-related complications.

Dedicated surgical suites. All of our surgeries are performed in a designated surgical suite. This room is kept fully sterile in order to prevent infection and cross-contamination.

Surgical attire. Our staff wears disposable caps and masks the entire time that they are in the surgical suite. Anyone involved in the procedure itself also wears sterile gowns and single-use gloves.

Sterile packs and equipment. We carefully clean, sterilize and wrap our surgical equipment and instruments before each surgery.
